Find mixed yield, not just bag weight
A package may list yield as cubic feet, litres, or cubic metres per bag. Use that mixed-volume figure in the calculation. The ConcreteYard calculator stores the yield in cubic feet internally and lets you view or enter it in cubic feet or litres.
This reference table reproduces approximate yields from QUIKRETE Concrete Mix product data sheet No. 1101. It describes that product's listed yields; other mixes and brands can differ.
| QUIKRETE Concrete Mix bag | Listed yield | Approx. litres |
|---|---|---|
| 40 lb | 0.30 ft³ | 8.5 L |
| 50 lb | 0.375 ft³ | 10.6 L |
| 60 lb | 0.45 ft³ | 12.7 L |
| 80 lb | 0.60 ft³ | 17.0 L |
Work from volume including your allowance
First calculate the pour volume. Then apply your chosen allowance. Divide that planning volume by the yield per bag and round up to the next whole bag.
Example: 10 × 10 ft slab, 4 in thick
The net volume is 33.33 ft³. With a chosen 10% allowance, the estimate is 36.67 ft³. Using a 0.60 ft³ yield gives 36.67 ÷ 0.60 = 61.11, so the quantity rounds up to 62 bags.
The number changes when the yield changes. Enter the package's own yield instead of selecting a size by weight alone.
Products with the same weight can list different yields
Manufacturer product pages show why the label matters: listed 50 lb yields can differ between product lines, and specialized mixes can have their own data. Treat bag-size shortcuts as a starting estimate, then replace them with the exact product yield before ordering.
Mixing water, application instructions, and yield are product-specific. Follow the package and its technical sheet; this page is not a mixing specification.
When the package gives litres
Convert litres to cubic feet by dividing litres by 28.316846592. For example, 17 L is about 0.600 ft³. Enter the yield without rounding it more than the package does; displayed bag counts still round up to whole bags.
Buying concrete bags from Home Depot or another retailer
A retailer search such as concrete bags Home Depot can lead to several different products. Match the manufacturer, exact product name, bag size and mixed yield before using a quantity estimate. A mortar, grout, repair mix or sand mix should not automatically be given the yield of a standard concrete mix.
For QUIKRETE Concrete Mix No. 1101, use the product sheet linked below and the current package. For another QUIKRETE or Sakrete mix, read that product’s own instructions. Record the price per bag separately from the yield; a retailer listing or familiar package weight alone is not a volume conversion.
